Grumpback Whale

Step by Step Grumpback Whale

Step 1.

To create a background, use a darker blue and blend into a lighter one, it doesn’t matter which goes at the top. Add clouds and soften the bottom of them by dragging with a dry brush. Use a mid grey to map out where the design will sit.

Step 2.

For the whale, use a dark grey to shade and define the shape. While the paint is still wet, use a wet paintbrush to blend where needed.

Step 3.

For the buildings, colour with a mid brown and follow with a dark brown to create shadow. Add tiny dots to indicate windows and doors.

Step 4.

Highlight everything with white. Again, take a wet paintbrush and blend the white where needed, particularly on the body of the whale to give a smoother appearance.

Step 5.

Finally, paint the trees with dark brown, followed by green dots to create the leaves. Mix a small amount of black with the dark grey and define the darkest areas, add some dark spots around the mouth and fins, and don’t forget to give him a grumpy face!
